CSR RISK MAPPING

In France, the successive adoption of the Sapin 2 Law (2016), the corporations’ Duty of Care Act (2017) and the PACTE Law (2019) has made the assessment of environmental and social impacts a top priority when it comes to organizing and monitoring company activities.

The Duty of Care plan, which must be issued by “any company employing […] no fewer than five thousand employes in [France], or […] ten thousand employees […] internationally,” requires companies to perform ESG risk mapping.

This mapping forms the centerpiece of the plan, since it must enable companies to:

  • Identify, assess, prioritize and manage the organization’s risks at a given point in time.
  • Prioritize risk management determined as part of processes.
  • Complement the quantitative approach to incident reporting.

As such, ESG assessment criteria overlaps with financial analysis, and ESG risk mapping must be clearly defined

THIS MAPPING FORMS THE CENTERPIECE OF THE PLAN, SINCE IT MUST ENABLE COMPANIES TO:

ESG RISK CASES

Environmental factors:

Organizational impacts on the environment, and environmental impacts on the organization (double materiality assessment) with a focus on global warming, water consumption, pollution, waste management, energy efficiency and biodiversity

Social factors:

Human rights, health and safety, working conditions, community engagement, diversity, demographic trends, consumer insights and shareholder reputation.

Governance factors:

Board independence and diversity, alignment of shareholder and manager interests, compensation, shareholder rights, transparency and disclosure, business ethics and corporate culture.

ASSESSMENT

Review current strategies and policies:

A CSR assessment evaluates an organization’s maturity, conducting a materiality analysis to illustrate discrepancies between managerial policies and real-life scenarios

Formally develop a materiality matrix:

The assessment sorts and pinpoints the most relevant aspects that outline the company’s CSR strategy and current situation

Determine the main CSR setbacks:

Given that CSR must be factored into overall economic performance, this assessment spotlights the main CSR setbacks for an organization, based on its area of expertise

Typical assignments
  • Company social impact study and required KPIs
  • Economic measurements to quantify the social impact of transformation
  • Risk and opportunity assessment of the transition to net-zero carbon
